Both Joaquin Phoenix and Natalie Portman are vegan, and they own dogs. What are they feeding their dogs? If your vegan because you don't believe in killing animals then why own a pet that needs to eat them.

There is a such thing as vegan dog food. Comes just like any other dog food, in bags or cans.
I doubt anyone here can state with authority what Natalie Portman or Joaquin Phoenix might feed to their pets.
I am vegan, and I feed my pets a diet of raw organic chicken, with some oils, organ meats.
I eat what is best for me. I feed my pets what is best for them.
The answer is in your question. Dogs and cats Need to eat mat. Humans don’t. And in fact it’s far more healthier for humans not to eat meat. Red meat is known to increase the risk of heart disease and obesity, to name just a few reasons.

Vegans must feed their pets meat based food they are obligite carnivores! Besides animals don’t have morals but we humans do!
Well I am not vegan,so I do not have to worry about such nonsense! I eat meat and fish and so do my pets which are aquatic turtles!!!

I don’t know about dogs, but cats are obligate carnivores, which is why I feed my cat food that has meat in it.
Probably because
a. vegans don’t “own” animals, even if that is the relationship society pre-supposes on them. Veganism is a philosophy in opposition to animal commodification, and therefore any animals who are taken care of by vegans were and are not commodified by them- they were likely rescued from certain death as would otherwise result from rampant pet over-breeding in the US
b. more importantly, there are and have been nutritionally-fortified vegan pet foods for a number of years.
There are no magical nutrients which cannot be synthesized.

it would not make someone a bad person just because they dont eat meat ,but dogs and cats do.
Dogs and cats do not make moral decisions on whether to be a vegan or not – they are instinctual animals – they only run on their instincts. Dogs and cats need to eat meat, as they are natural carnivores. Dogs CAN eat vegetables and there are some vegan dog foods that you can feed your dog to, but cats CANNOT eat vegetables.
Animals have different digestive systems than humans, while we can digest vegetables and fruits without any problems, cats cannot. Their systems lack the necessary enzymes to digest these foods and they can cause problems for the cats. Cats are by nature carnivores only. They need meat to survive.
actually dogs dont need any nutrients that have to come from meat or animal products, just like humans they can be vegan and healthy provided you make sure they are getting enough of the right stuff. however unfortunately it is impossible to be a healthy vegan cat as they need taurine which can only be found in animal products
therefore it is up to the person to decide whether they feel it is ok for them to feed a cat food which they won’t eat themselves and in doing so support an industry they dont support. with dogs its easier 
First off, nobody really “owns” a cat. Second, while I can do just fine without meat, my cat needs it to survive. She’s a CAT. Third, many vegans adopt or rescue animals for companionship; our lives are enriched by our pets. It’s nice to have someone to come home to, even if she doesn’t say much (my baby is a cat of few words).
While some dogs can do well on a vegetarian diet–they’re omnivores–some cannot. I suppose it depends on the dog.
It doesn’t matter. Just get them meat because that’s their natural food type and besides it’s not for the vegans any way, but if they dont want to get meat… Then that’s too bad, because cats and dogs don’t naturally survive on most non-meat food items, and feeding em something like tofu is torture for them and not healthy.
