How Do I Serve Vegan Food at My Daughters Birthday Party for Non Vegan Family and Friends?

January 30, 2012

Some of my family and friends are not very supportive of our lifestyle. How do i come up with vegan party food non-vegans will enjoy? Also i want to make their cakes, any suggestions?

I am not a vegan but incorporate many dishes that are vegan into my diet.

A good salad is always a solid choice

Pasta with marinara, pesto (sans parmesan), garlic and oil or garlic and broccoli/broccoli rabe.

Cheeseless pizza (topped with thin summer squash, onions, mushrooms)

Grilled vegetables

Gazpacho soup

Lentils and Wheat (a Lebanese favorite in our family)

Stuffed Grape Leaves

Eggplant Parmesan minus the Parmesan is the only dish I can think of besides pasta.

Well you’re cooking and they’re eating your food so they should put up and shut up. But obviously that’s not very constructive, so…
As long as the flavours aren’t bland your audience won’t notice the lack of animal products. As a non-vegan, vegan foods I have enjoyed include crisps with a spicy bean dip and an amazing carrot quiche/flan made with soya instead of egg, from this restaurant: http://www.222veggievegan.com/ which is full with vegans eating out with non-vegan friends.
In addition there is a chef called Ottolenghi who does the best salads/vegetable dishes in the world http://www.ottolenghi.co.uk/ He is not specifically vegan so do check the recipes carefully, but (for example) his sweet potato with pecan and maple is so good, the biggest meat eater will be back for more. He has recipes on his site and also does cakes.

Good luck!

Pasta salad or spaghetti, chili and corn bread, green salads of course, potato salad, veggie platters with dip, potato chips with dip. Tofu dogs and veggie burgers. Garlic bread. Fresh fruit, look on vegan sites for cake recipes. I use e-n-er G egg replacer instead of eggs and there are lots of ways to replace butter.

That’s too bad that you aren’t supported by your friends and family- I know how hard that can be. Here are some ideas that I honestly think everyone would enjoy. Vegweb is a great resource for recipes:

Appetizers:

Hummus with veggies and/or pita (my family always eats this at dinners and they are meat eaters!)
Mixed nuts
Olives
Bruschetta
Home-made Guacamole w/ chips

Salads:
Quinoa salad
Lentil salad
Pasta Salad
Salad with fruit and nuts (like walnuts/apples)

Dinner:
Roasted veggies
Pasta w/ marinara
Soup
Vegan soft or hard tacos (w/ veggie crumbles and vegan cheese)
Beans and rice

As for desserts, there are tons of vegan cake recipes online as well. Here’s a good site:
Good luck!! I feel for ya :)

I’m not vegan but I have made vegan recipes (mostly soups) – and I think they are delicious. Just don’t call it “vegan” cookies or “vegan” cake (it just doesn’t sound appealing to us non-vegans) when you serve them the food. Just say you made some food that everyone can enjoy. No need to change anything for anyone. It’s your house, your rules. If they aren’t happy with it, their loss, not yours.

Hummus and/or salsa and raw veggies is always good. You can also make ants on a log with raisins and peanut butter (or almond butter if there are allergy concerns). Better yet, set out dishes of peanut butter and sticks of celery and let the kids make their own (with plastic knives). I’ve heard of ladybugs on a log, which is dried cherries or cranberries instead of raisins.

You can use vegan onion soup mix and Tofutti sour cream (vegan) to make an onion dip for chips or even the veggies.

You can make a vegan chili with TVP or tempeh instead of meat and serve with cornbread/macaroni (vegan chili mac) or chips.

There are companies that make vegan taco mix, and you can have a make-your-own taco bar.

If it’s not too cool where you are, make grilled corn on the cob and/or veggie kabobs. You may also want to put chunks of tofu or any analogue on the skewers.

You can throw together a pasta salad with pasta, veggies, and a vegan bottled dressing or make your own.

For cakes, it’s pretty easy to veganize them. You can use soy milk in equal proportion to cows’ milk in any recipe. And Ener-G Egg Replacer is excellent for vegan baking; you can get it at most natural foods stores or at Whole Foods.
